WEDNESDAY 23-31: PALM BEACH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
The 23rd installment of Palm Beach’s film festival kicks off Wednesday with a screening of Win Win, the newest film starring America’s favorite schlub, Paul Giamatti. In Win Win, he plays a lawyer and part-time high-school wrestling coach. Sounds promising. After that, and the ensuing afterparty at West Palm Beach’s Pure Vida nightclub, movies will screen at locations across Palm Beach County, from the Living Room Theater at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton all the way up to the Muvico Parisian 20 in West Palm Beach’s CityPlace. Check out the Web site for the lengthy list of documentaries, features and shorts that will screen.
WEDNESDAY 23-APRIL 03: SONY ERICSSON OPEN
As if Ultra Music Festival weren’t doing enough to fill up hotels across Miami, the Sony Ericsson Open takes place at the same time, and through April 3. Indeed, the biggest name of the open (that would be No. 1 ranked Rafael Nadal) plays on Saturday, the biggest day for Ultra. Nadal will begin the process of eviscerating his opponent at 8 p.m. Said opponent will be either Jérémy Chardy or Kei Nishikori, depending on which of them wins their match on Thursday. And we wish that winner all the best, God bless ’em. Hey, he could beat Nadal. Stranger things have happened. Other competitors include no. 2 ranked Novak Djokovic, local hero Andy Roddick, and some guy named Federer. The women’s matches will include Maria Sharapova and Caroline Wozniacki.
FRIDAY 25: BOB SINCLAR
If any DJ has a knack for creating club anthems that can remain relevant even after obsessive radio play, it’s Bob Sinclar. His single “World, Hold On (Children of the Sky)” came out in 2006, and “Love Generation” was released a year earlier. Both songs are still an essential part of any house-music party. The French DJ re-released these songs last year with fresh mixes on Made in Jamaica, which earned him a Grammy nomination. House DJs Michael Calfan and Gregori Klosman also will hit the decks at SET. In case you miss this party, Sinclar will perform with Pete Tong and DJ Jazzy Jeff at the Pacha Ibiza pool party Saturday at the Shelborne Beach Resort.
Location: SET, 320 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach
Time: 10 p.m.-5 a.m.
Cost: $100

FRIDAY 25 AND SUNDAY 27: RACHEL GOODRICH
Rachel Goodrich endeared herself to us with her quirky instrumentation, fine songwriting and gutsy determination to make music on her own terms. Her Churchill’s gigs were the best things to happen at that place since the World Cup. And then, she moved to Los Angeles and broke our hearts. But now, Goodrich returns to South Florida for just two nights as she tours in support of her self-titled sophomore effort. Locos por Juana will share the bill in Miami, and Pretty Please will play at the Propaganda show. Either way, we’re more than happy to welcome Goodrich home. Where she belongs. Please don’t leave us. We love you.
MONDAY 28: KATHY GRIFFIN
Kathy Griffin just can’t shut her mouth, and why would anyone want her to? The fiery-haired funny woman loves cracking jokes about her botched liposuction and dissing Sarah Palin, whom she has infuriated by, among other things, taking Bristol’s baby daddy, Levi Johnston, as her escort to the Teen Choice Awards. Griffin recently appeared on Broadway in the one-woman show Kathy Griffin Wants a Tony!, on Fox’s Glee and on the Bravo comedy special 50 and Not Pregnant. Maybe life on the D-list isn’t so bad. Griffin also will perform Tuesday at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach.

THURSDAY 17: KISS
So you feel like going out tonight, but it’s St. Pat’s, and you’re not into wearing green so much as fake blood and face paint. Well, don’t fret, you weirdo; just join your fellow soldiers of the Kiss Army down at the Hard Rock. The hoary Kiss lands at Hard Rock Live in full regalia tonight, the final nonfestival appearance of the band’s Hottest Show on Earth tour. The tour initially ended in Guadalajara, Mexico, in October, but the group added a few dates in March to what has been a marathon event that began just before the 2009 release of Sonic Boom, the group’s first album in 11 years. Since then, Kiss, the members of which range in age from 50 to 61, have crossed the globe twice with multiple tour legs in North America and Europe. The band’s only breaks have come in January 2010 and the aforementioned months between the Guadalajara show and this brief run of concerts in March. The pace would be back-breaking for a group half Kiss’ age, which leads us to believe that either there’s somebody else wearing the makeup, or else the members of Kiss really are from a different planet. Probably the latter.
Location: Hard Rock Live, 5747 Seminole Way, Hollywood
Time: 8 p.m.
Cost: $75-$165

THURSDAY 17: KENNY CHESNEY
So you feel like going out tonight, but it’s St. Pat’s, and you’re not into wearing green so much as cowboy hats and Wranglers. Well, don’t fret, you hick. Kenny Chesney’s show in West Palm Beach will provide all the entertainment you need. Given that this generation’s Lynyrd Skynyrd is a rapper from Detroit (and a yeehaw to you, Kid Rock), there’s a sort of bent logic to the idea that our generation’s Jimmy Buffett is a country singer from Tennessee. Of course, that’s nothing new — Chesney has been nipping at Buffett’s heels since the beginning of the 2000s, when the release of No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problem marked a sharp right turn from Chesney’s “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy” work of the 1990s. Since then, the country-western star’s move into the Gulf-and-Western sound blazed by Buffett can be documented in album titles alone: All I Want for Christmas Is a Real Good Tan, When the Sun Goes Down, Just Who I Am: Poets and Pirates, Lucky Old Sun and his latest, last year’s Hemingway’s Whiskey. But really, the new Buffett being from Appalachia makes sense, and not only in the twisted-logic, Kid Rock is Southern kind of way. The Buffett-esque dream of passing out slowly while sitting under a palm tree and sipping rum from the bottle has always had more cachet with people who are unable to do that very thing on any given weekend.

THURSDAY 17: DOPAPOD
So you feel like going out tonight, but it’s St. Pat’s, and you’re not into wearing green so much as tie-dye T-shirts and patchwork pants. Well, don’t fret, you hippie. The Funky Buddha will welcome the funky foursome of Dopapod for a rare southeastern appearance. The Boston-based band released its debut album, Radar, in 2009 to great acclaim and is currently working on new material even as it tours up and down the East Coast. On Friday night, the foursome will hit Miami’s Transit Lounge before heading back northward.

SATURDAY 19: FOR THE LITTLE ONES
The Jack and Jill Children’s Center in Fort Lauderdale has helped more than 13,000 kids in need since it started in 1942. Tonight, you can contribute to its cause while enjoying local music and art. This party at the Bubble will feature the Coral Springs-based country-rock band Harvey and the Buckets, Fort Lauderdale folk rock-act Sweet Bronco and works by artists such as Jessica DeJohn, Blair Hess and Susan Buzzi. Live-painting, craftmaking and raffles for artwork and massages also will be available.
Location: The Bubble, 810 N.E. Fourth Ave., Fort Lauderdale
Time: 6 p.m.-midnight
Cost: $10-$25

SATURDAY 19-SUNDAY 20: JAZZ IN THE GARDENS
Jazz in the Gardens is already kind of a big deal, but a set by Lauryn Hill? That’s epic. At least, it could be, if Hill doesn’t keep the audience waiting three hours for her to appear onstage, play songs nobody knows or berate her fans for expecting her to act like a professional, all of which she did at shows earlier this year in St. Louis and Brooklyn. Even if she does repeat that diva act, her performance Saturday is sure to be memorable. (Her set is scheduled for 10:35 p.m., but, well, you know.) Saturday’s bill offers nine other, more-reliable soul and R&B entertainers, including Lalah Hathaway, Al Jarreau, Heads of State with Bobby Brown, Charlie Wilson and DJ Irie. The lineup on Sunday is even more impressive, with Branford Marsalis, Gladys Knight, En Vogue, El DeBarge and the Isley Brothers.
Location: Sun Life Stadium, 2269 N.W. 199th St., Miami Gardens
Time: 3 p.m.
Cost: $45-$70 each day

FRIDAY 11: SNOOP DOGG
It’s hard to fathom that A-listers such as Johnny Depp have performed at the quirky Broward County venue Club Cinema. Now, Snoop Dogg will join the “club” with a show there tonight. Snoop has a new album, Doggumentary, coming out March 29, on which he collaborates with Bootsy Collins, R. Kelly, T-Pain, Kanye West, John Legend and even Willie Nelson. While Snoop seems to fit better in the Magic City — where he’ll appear Thursday during a DJ set at Liv, we’re looking forward to seeing the Long Beach rapper do his “G Thang” in Pompano Beach.
Location: Club Cinema, 3251 N. Federal Highway, Pompano Beach
Time: 9 p.m.
Cost: $35; $59.50 for VIP; $99 for backstage VIP

SATURDAY 12: 9 MILE FESTIVAL
What was once the Bob Marley Caribbean Festival has been renamed for Bob’s birthplace, but that’s about the only thing that has changed. The lineup still features about half the kids Marley produced: Stephen, Damian, Julian and Ky-mani. It also features a few additional reggae acts, such as Inner Circle and Kevens. More noteworthy is the addition of acts that only could be called “reggae” in the loosest sense of the world. Pot-rock goofballs Slightly Stoopid are on the list, as is Major Lazer, the DJ duo of Diplo and Switch that blends reggae, hip-hop and other disparate influences into a danceable synthesis. Also hitting the decks will be DJ Hatcha, one of the guiding lights of the UK’s dubstep movement. And perhaps most noteworthy (to our tastes, anyway) is the presence of Thievery Corporation on the bill. The world-music-fusing collective puts on one of the best live shows we’ve seen.
Location: Bayfront Park, 301 Biscayne Blvd., Miami
Time: 1 p.m.
Cost: $58-$170, plus canned-food donations
Contact: Bobmarleymovement.com

SUNDAY 13: CALLE OCHO FESTIVAL
Calle Ocho is going caballero this year with a Kiss Country stage that will showcase local country acts such as David Ray and Amber Leigh. Also, in an effort to be eco-conscious, a few hundred recycling barrels will be added to the festival. But the 33rd annual Calle Ocho Festival would not be complete without a roster of Latin performers such as Hansel y Raul. Save room for delicioso paella and plantains and dance off the guilty calories at the best block party of the year.
Location: S.W. Eighth Street in Miami
Time: 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
Cost: Free

SUNDAY 13: TO BE HATED RECORD RELEASE PARTY
In late 2009 and early 2010, Fort Lauderdale’s bastion of indie-music goodness, Radio-Active Records, held Sunday matinee shows featuring a lot of local talent, but especially Mr. Entertainment and the Pookiesmackers, the longtime Hollywood-based weirdoes responsible for the most-interesting, carnival-themed music South Florida has ever seen. This Sunday, the old matinees will make a comeback for the 7-inch vinyl release of “Banned in Dade County,” the new single by local hardcore-punk act To Be Hated. That group, as well as Mr. E. and the aforementioned Pookiesmackers, will perform, along with Peaz+Soup. DJ Skidmark will spin tunes between sets. It all should make for a much better Sunday afternoon than the usual Bloody Marys and bad eggs.
Time: 2 p.m.
TUESDAY 15: JACOB JEFFRIES BAND
We don’t often stick a local band in the Best Bets, and when we do, it’s usually opening for a national act. Indeed, on Saturday, the Jacob Jeffries Band will do just that, but as the national acts involved are Sugar Ray and the Gin Blossoms, we thought it best to direct your attention to the Jacob Jeffries Band’s headlining gig at Original Fat Cat’s in Fort Lauderdale’s Himmarshee Village. The performance is noteworthy for several reasons. First, the Jacob Jeffries Band is one of the best things on the local scene, Jeffries being one of the best songwriters in South Florida, backed by a killer group of musicians. Second, the Fat Cat’s performance is a rare chance for the Broward crowd to see the usually Miami-centric act. And finally, you may be able to catch a few of the tunes Jeffries and his cohorts are currently ironing out in the studio as the band records its third album (and first in three years), Tell Me Secrets. For all those reasons, this show, like Charlie Sheen, should be full of winning.
Location: Original Fat Cat’s, 320 Himmarshee St., Fort Lauderdale

WEDNESDAY 02: BRIGHT EYES
Now that he’s gotten a little older, Conor Oberst seems to have outgrown the nigh-constant “he’s the next Dylan” pronouncements, which is a great thing for everyone involved. First off, no one is the next Dylan. Dylan is the only Dylan. Period. End of story. Second, it was never fair to Oberst, a truly great songwriter in his own right, to have his work overshadowed by the gargantuan footprints of a titan from another age. Free to be his own man, Oberst has truly shined over the past couple of years. His work with M. Ward and My Morning Jacket’s Jim James under the Monsters of Folk moniker was declared the album of the year in 2009 by none other than City Link’s own Dan Sweeney (a massively important endorsement, we know) and his first album in four years as Bright Eyes arrived in mid-February. The People’s Key finds Oberst in the modernistic vein of 2005’s Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, as opposed to the throwback, singer-songwriter side that occupies most Bright Eyes albums (see Cassadaga and I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning). That should make for a better concert experience in Miami Beach tonight, or at least a more-rowdy one. Cursive, an indie-rock band affiliated with Oberst’s Saddle Creek label, will open the show.
WEDNESDAY 02-SUNDAY 06: SOUTH BEACH COMEDY FESTIVAL
Any event in Miami Beach that requires people to not take themselves so seriously is a beautiful diversion. Comedy Central is bringing really funny people such as Adam Carolla, Wanda Sykes, Kathleen Madigan and Doug Benson. More than a dozen headliners will perform in addition to shows by Mad Cat Theatre Company. Here are some zingers from the performers to tide you over until show time:
Rachel Feinstein: “I’m having a hard time meeting somebody. I think it’s because there are so many princes out there. I don’t know which one to choose from.”
Sykes: “Why do you care that Bob and Jim are getting married, unless you were planning on fucking Bob or Jim?”
Benson tweeted this pickup line Feb. 22: “Foolproof way to pick up women: Run into a bar soaked in Gatorade and yell, ‘We won! We won!’ ”
Location: The Fillmore Miami Beach, 1700 Washington Ave. Additional locations include Colony Theater, New World Center, the Lincoln Road Free Stage, Backstage at the Fillmore and Gansevoort Hotel Miami Beach
SUNDAY 06: FAT SUNDAY MARDI GRAS PARTY
Jesus, is it Mardi Gras again? Feels like just yesterday that we finally shook off the hangover from last year’s celebration. But no matter. It’s time once again to throw on some beads, check out some bands and drink like Prohibition kicks in tomorrow. In previous years, we’ve always headed to Hollywood Beach for our South Florida version of Mardi Gras. But this year, Fort Lauderdale’s Snyder Park will play host to some of the best local blues and roots musicians with its Fat Sunday celebration. (Yeah, yeah. We all know Mardi Gras is on Tuesday. But let the 9-to-5ers have some fun too, eh?) The band, billed as the Alligator Alley Allstars, includes Albert Castiglia, J.P. Soars, Dave Shelley, Jimi Fiano, John Yarling and Kilmo, the former proprietor of Floridian- and Cajun-themed restaurant Alligator Alley, which closed last year. Speaking of which, part of the proceeds from this event will help finance the opening of a new Alligator Alley, which no doubt will be bigger and better. And even if it isn’t, anyplace will do as long as we can have Kilmo’s gumbo again. The bassist/gumbo master will serve up his stuff at the party, along with burgers, hot dogs, pulled pork, beer and cocktails.
Location: Snyder Park, 3299 S.W. Fourth Ave., Fort Lauderdale
Time: 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
Cost: $10 donation includes a beer or soda and a burger or dog. (Don’t be a dickhead. Donate.)
TUESDAY 08: FISHBONE
With the return of trumpeter Walter Kibby last year after a seven-year hiatus, ska-reggae-funk-soul-punk-metal weirdoes Fishbone have a surprisingly consistent lineup for a 32-year-old band. (Side note: Oh, my Sweet Jesus, how is it possible that Fishbone is 32 years old?) Bassist Norwood Fisher and saxophonist/ringmaster Angelo Moore have remained in the band since its founding, and the drum and guitar slots that seemed to constantly rotate members in the band’s ’80s and ’90s heyday have settled firmly behind John Steward and former Suicidal Tendencies guitarist Rocky George. Although Fishbone hasn’t released an album since 2006’s Still Stuck in Your Throat (which was, in turn, its first album in six years), a new record has been promised for later this year. But that doesn’t mean the group has been inactive. Last year, it issued the film Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone, which first screened at the Los Angeles Film Festival in June and is now making its way through the global film-festival circuit. This week alone, the film screens at festivals in Auckland, New Zealand; Fargo, N.D. and Arlington, Va. Local hip-hop collective ¡Mayday! will open the show.
Location: Grand Central 697 N. Miami Ave., Miami
Time: 8 p.m.

TUESDAY 08: KID ROCK AND JAMEY JOHNSON
In 2009, Jamey Johnson opened for Willie Nelson at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, and now, the new outlaw of country is back to open for Kid Rock (though we think this show should be billed the other way around). Kid Rock, who turned 40 in January, proved he could evolve from “Bawitdaba” after his 2007 release, Rock N Roll Jesus. And perhaps it’s even time to forgive Pamela Anderson’s ex-hubby for his cover of “Sweet Home Alabama,” since he has one of Alabama’s finest natives on tour with him. Johnson will perform Southern singles such as “High Cost of Living” and “The Dollar.” On a recent set list for the Born Free tour, Johnson also covered Nelson’s “My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys,” so we can keep our sticky whiskey fingers crossed he will repeat it at this show. Fellow blue-collar rocker Ty Stone also will perform.
Location: Hard Rock Live at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, 5747 Seminole Way, Hollywood
Time: 8 p.m.
Cost: $46-$66

WEDNESDAY 23: DIRTY HAIRY SECOND-ANNIVERSARY PARTY
Hard to believe the Wednesday night party at Liv is already 2 years old. It seems like only yesterday that we got the announcement that it would begin. But here we are, and the party is still going strong, bringing down the sort of electro-pop bands and DJs that the kids can’t seem to get enough of these days. Case in point: Dragonette, the Canadian group that will ring in tonight’s anniversary. Although it has had a string of moderately successful songs in Canada, the act probably is best known for its collaboration with DJ Martin Solveig, “Hello,” which is currently playing in about 20 clubs and a Trident commercial near you. The absurdly catchy tune alone will make the set worthwhile.
Location: Liv, 4441 Collins Ave., Miami Beach
Time: 11 p.m.
Cost: $30 at Wantickets.com

THURSDAY 24: BRUISE CRUISE KICKOFF PARTY
So the Bruise Cruise is sold-out, and even if there were space, you probably don’t have the coin to spring for a room on a cruise ship, anyway. But fear not, music lover. You can catch most of the acts that will appear on the Bruise Cruise at tonight’s kickoff party, which will feature the Black Lips, Vivian Girls, Quintron and Ms. Pussycat, Thee Oh Sees, Strange Boys, Ty Segall, Turbo Fruits! and local favorites Surfer Blood and the Jacuzzi Boys. Of course, it would be difficult to call Surfer Blood a “local act” at this point, even though the band hails from West Palm Beach. The group has garnered national attention and is one of the leading lights of the cruise, along with New York-based all-girl group Vivian Girls and the Black Lips, whose over-the-top, sexually charged live shows have rendered the band not only infamous but entirely unwelcome in certain parts of the world: The band fled India one step ahead of the police and an angry mob.
Location: Grand Central, 697 N. Miami Ave., Miami
Time: 6 p.m.
Cost: $15 or free with Bruise Cruise ticket
THURSDAY 24: GINUWINE AND FRIDAY 25: T-PAIN
It’s going to be a weekend of hip-hop heavy-hitters at Mansion. On Thursday, Ginuwine will host a release party for his latest album, Elgin, which came out Feb. 15. The R&B singer has stripped down to his hip-hop soul roots on his new album, whose title is his real first name. DJs Affect and LS One will spin. Then, on Friday, T-Pain will perform a guest DJ set at Mansion’s We Rock Hip-Hop Party alongside DJs Affect and EFX. His club hit “Tipsy” is bound to make the playlist. But hey, if you’re going to hear this song for the 547th time, it may as well be from the guy who created it.
Location: Mansion, 1235 Washington Ave., Miami Beach
Time: 11 each night

THURSDAY 24-SUNDAY 27: SOUTH BEACH WINE AND FOOD FESTIVAL
For a few days each year, the image-obsessed crowd on Miami Beach throws its high-protein, gluten-free diet aside for full-throttle indulgence. It’s not cool to whine about calories during this epic event for foodies. At this year’s Wine and Food fest, Rachael Ray will host her Burger Bash, Paula Deen will present a Southern gospel brunch and Bobby Flay, Giada De Laurentiis, Emeril Lagasse and Martha Stewart will head up events. While most of these gatherings sell out faster than a Justin Bieber concert, you can still sink your teeth into wine seminars, barbecue dinners, cocktail clinics and the Whole Foods Market Grand Tasting Village.
Location: The Whole Foods Market Grand Tasting Village will be set up at Ocean Drive and 13th Street. See Web site for other locations.
Time: The festival will kick off 6:15 p.m. Thursday and end 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
TUESDAY 01: REFUSE RESIST, SADPLANT, NOBODY’S HERO
The newest thing to hit the local hardcore scene — and for several years, easily the best — Nobody’s Hero will open tonight for touring punk acts Sadplant and Refuse Resist. Nobody’s Hero includes members of ongoing local act Guajiro and gone-but-not-forgotten outfits the Vandals and Against All Authority. The group’s fiery, politically charged lyrics and Cookie-Monster-impression-free vocals are a throwback to 1980s hardcore acts such as Bad Religion and a much-needed antidote to the sludgy drivel that most hardcore acts seem to wallow in these days. Refuse Resist provides a perfect opening for Nobody’s Hero, trafficking in similar, angry-leftist themes. Sadplant should provide a nice counterpoint with much-more-lyrical levity than the other groups, the band’s songs focusing more on skateboarding and weed than, say, the inevitable crushing tyranny of the military-industrial complex. The next night, Wednesday, March 2, the acts will appear in Broward County at the Monterey Club, 2608A S. Federal Highway, in Fort Lauderdale.
Location: Eve, 1306 N. Miami Ave., Miami

THURSDAY 17: JOSH THOMPSON
Not every country singer who twangs about blue-collar life has actually lived it. Josh Thompson has. The 33-year-old singer from Wisconsin spent the earlier part of his life working in construction. Working hard all day and looking forward to that ice-cold beer at the end of the week prompted him to co-write “Beer on the Table.” The song has become an underground anthem for any man working a job he barely tolerates. “It puts the gas in my truck, butter on my biscuits,” Thompson sings, “Couple bucks when I’m itchin’, for a scratch-off ticket.” Hearing him perform this song tonight will inspire us to start the weekend early.

FRIDAY 18: UPROOT ANDY, LANZALLAMAS MONOFONICA AND DJ PAUER
Picture a movie in which the protagonist, maybe a spy or a latter-day Indiana Jones — some sort of globetrotting adventurer, in other words — is walking through the streets of a large South American city. As he crosses through a marketplace, his archnemesis’ hired goons suddenly are all around him, and the chase is on! A fruit vendor’s stand gets upended. Some poor lady who was carrying her clean laundry gets knocked over — all the usual action-movie tropes. The music of this scene would be provided by Uproot Andy, a Brooklyn-based DJ whose blend of Latin beats and buzzing, electro melodies is at once familiar and deeply exotic. Local acts DJ Pauer and Lanzallamas Monofónica also will perform, and the two are perfectly suited to share a bill with Uproot Andy. DJ Pauer and the septet of Lanzallamas both blend world music with modern sounds in their own way, the former with electronic beats and the latter with a jazzy, sophisticated vibe. Both will be celebrating the release of new albums at this show, with Lanzallamas issuing a digital EP and DJ Pauer debuting the album Soundtrack.

FRIDAY 18: KIM LENZ AND THE JAGUARS
If the Poor House looks a little thinned out these days, it’s because all the tattoo-covered, chain-smoking, black-garbed kids are hanging out at the Monterey Club. In a surprisingly short time, the place has become the epicenter for the crowd that wallows in ink and booze and fetishizes hot rods, pin-up girls and tiki culture. Our kind of people, in other words. And they should be out in force for tonight’s concert by Kim Lenz and the Jaguars. Few bands could provide a better soundtrack to the Monterey Club. Lenz’s straight-ahead, throwback rockabilly screams Monterey, and it’s damned entertaining, whether you’re aiming to grease up your hair and spend a night twirling your girl across the dance floor or whether you plan on slamming back rye and looking for someone to shape up with that switchblade you carry in your boot. Either way, it’ll be a hell of a time.

SATURDAY 19-MONDAY 21: THE 48TH ANNUAL COCONUT GROVE ARTS FESTIVAL
Known for its rich history of presenting local artists and musicians, the Coconut Grove Arts Festival offers a prime opportunity to catch up with familiar musical acts and to discover new ones. More than a dozen bands will perform at this weekend’s event, including Latin fusion acts such as Suénalo (Saturday); the Spam Allstars, who were recently featured in the documentary Monica and David (Sunday); and Lao Tizer (Monday). Artists will display works in a variety of media, including pieces made of glass and wood. In true Grove style, eating will be a major part of the festivities. At the Global Food Village, guests can experience food from Caribbean and Latin cultures.
SUNDAY 20: OZZY OSBOURNE
Now that he has taken on a doddering-old-doofus persona on television, Ozzy just doesn’t get the respect he used to. Sure, warm oatmeal and cool apple sauce are more a part of his diet now than the heads of doves and bats, but he still puts on a great show. Hell, he’d be the most badass figure in this issue were it not for the fact that Lemmy Kilmister appears in this week’s CD reviews. In any case, Ozzy’s Scream Tour lands in South Florida tonight, supporting the album of the same name that came out this past June and was re-released in October with a bonus CD of live and unreleased material. And the tour date in Sunrise couldn’t have come at a better time, being on the Sabbath. It’s the perfect day to worship at the feet of the Prince of Darkness. Slash will open the show.

WEDNESDAY 09: YANN TIERSEN
French composer Yann Tiersen experienced a classic case of childhood rebellion when he smashed his violin at age 7. As an adult, however, Tiersen has found solace in the instrument. He also has become quite skilled on piano, guitar, accordion and banjo. Tiersen landed on America’s hipster radar in 2001 with his score for the quirky French film Amélie. His latest album, 2010’s Dust Lane, offers a sweet but somber combination of synth-folk that Tiersen recorded while coping with the deaths of his mother and dear friend. S. Carey, the drummer for Bon Iver, will open tonight’s show.
Ten-time world-champion surfer Kelly Slater stars in this 3-D IMAX film that will leave you feeling as if you’re plunging into Tahitian waters with him and Raimana Van Bastolaer, a Tahitian surfer whose family has been riding local waves for generations. The movie explains how waves form and explores the history and myths that lie deep within Tahitian culture and the nation’s connection to the sea. The screening times listed below are just for opening night. On Saturday and Sunday, the museum will present surfing demonstrations, Polynesian dancing and other surfing-related activities.
FRIDAY 11-SUNDAY 13: GARLIC FEST
Delray Beach’s annual Garlic Fest attracts fans of the stinky clove for which it’s named, of course, with a huge variety of garlic-based dishes in its Gourmet Alley, up to and including garlic ice cream. But the festival also has drawn bigger and bigger names to its entertainment stage each year, and this year tops previous ones with the appearance of blues legend Buddy Guy Saturday night. Guy took up the crown of King of the Chicago Blues when Muddy Waters kicked it in 1983 and has been the undisputed champion of electric blues ever since. Along with one of the very few living legends of the blues, the headliners also include ersatz legends Dark Star Orchestra and Led Hed. Having never witnessed the no-doubt scorching “Stairway to Heaven” Florida’s own Led Hed can offer, we can’t comment on Sunday’s headliner. But Dark Star Orchestra is about as good as a cover band can be. Instead of simply playing the songs of the Grateful Dead, the band re-creates an entire concert, often with jaw-dropping results.
Location: Old School Square, North Swinton Avenue, Delray Beach
Time: 5 p.m.-11 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday
Cost: $10 per day

SATURDAY 12: BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE
Still touring to promote last May’s release of Forgiveness Rock Record, the group’s first full-length studio album in five years, Broken Social Scene arrives in Fort Lauderdale suffering from a reputation for being the other Canadian indie-rock co-op, standing forever in the shadow of the New Pornographers. The comparison is apt in some ways. The New Pornographers has always been the baby of A.C. Newman, with Neko Case, Dan Bejar, Kathryn Calder and a multitude of others who look on the New Pornographers as a side project, at best, offering their time and talent to help Newman reach his vision. And while Broken Social Scene now counts a dozen or so people as members, depending on the day of the week — or even the hour of the day — the group’s first album, 2001’s Feel Good Lost, was created almost entirely by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, who remain the central force of the band. But there, the comparison ends. The ambient, mathy sound of Broken Social Scene, after all, bares little resemblance to the New Pornographers’ acid-country power-pop. But if you like good music, you’re probably a fan of both bands, anyway.

SATURDAY 12: FLOGGING MOLLY
Of the myriad Celtic punk bands to come out of the States, we have to say Flogging Molly is our favorite. It’s really a choice between this band and the Dropkick Murphys, and while the Murphs have a blisteringly high-energy show, we have to give the nod to Fogging Molly, if only because the group keeps coming back to us. It seems a year can’t go by in South Florida without a Flogging Molly concert, and that’s a great thing to be able to say about a national touring act in these tough economic times, when most bands turn the bus around and head back north once they reach Tampa, Orlando or even Atlanta. But Flogging Molly headlined last year’s SunFest, played the Pompano Beach Amphitheatre the year before and appeared at Revolution Live the year before that. God bless ‘em, because we need it. You shouldn’t have to live through an entire year without hoisting a pint of Guinness and screaming along to “What’s Left of the Flag.”
Location: The Fillmore Miami Beach, 1700 Washington Ave.
Time: 7 p.m.
Cost: $40.50

TUESDAY 15-WEDNESDAY 16: DANIEL ELLSBERG
It was a case that bore a number of comparisons to our own era’s Wikileaks and Julian Assange. An unpopular war started on fictional premises results in the president of the United States knowingly lying to the American public. Some of those lies are exposed by a whistleblower, and the government then does its damnedest to discredit and destroy said whistleblower. (Or in the case of Assange, even the person to whom the whistle was blown.) In any case, Daniel Ellsberg was serving as a military analyst at the Pentagon in 1971 when he gave to reporters a massive history of the United States’ relations with Vietnam. These Pentagon Papers, as they came to be called, discredited several administrations’ public stances toward Vietnam and led to Richard Nixon’s National Security Adviser, Henry Kissinger, describing Ellsberg as “the most dangerous man in America.” (Side note: If Kissinger’s calling you that, you must be doing something right.) That quote serves as the title of the new biopic about Ellsberg, which screens Tuesday afternoon at Florida Atlantic University’s University Theater. Then, on Wednesday, Ellsberg himself will make an appearance on campus to give a lecture and sign his book.
Location: Florida Atlantic University, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton
Time: 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and 3 p.m. Feb. 16
Cost: Free for screening, $12 for lecture

WEDNESDAY 02: YOLANDA BE COOL
If you’ve been out to a club or fashion show in Miami in the past year, you’ve likely heard the addictive electro-swing anthem “We No Speak Americano” by Australia’s Yolanda Be Cool. Sampling the 1956 Italian jazz song “Tu Vuò Fà l’Americano [You Pretend To Be an American]” by Renato Carosone, “We No Speak Americano” has become become a No. 1 single in more than 15 countries and was sampled by Pitbull in his song “Bon, Bon.” In a 2010 interview with Scene magazine, Yolanda Be Cool, which consists of Sylvester Martinez and Johnson Peterson, described their song as “a special type of music cocaine.” This could explain why listening to the 4 1/2-minute song is the equivalent of drinking nine Red Bulls.
FRIDAY 04: THE MAXIM PARTY
Fort Lauderdale’s latest hot spot will host the best Super Bowl kickoff party in South Florida when Maxim magazine holds its pregame party at the Las Olas location. Maxim’s Hometown Hottie winner, Lisa Morales, and Deco Drive’s Shireen Sandoval will play hostesses to the event. The whole party is one of just three such events that the magazine will be hosting nationwide. We’d be happily surprised, if we weren’t so confident in South Florida’s awesomeness. If you’re gonna have three simultaneous parties across the country, one of them had damned well better be here.
Location: Vibe, 301 Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale

FRIDAY 04: YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND
While other progressive-bluegrass acts such as the String Cheese Incident have largely abandoned their roots for a more-straight-ahead, jazzy, jam-band sound, Yonder Mountain String Band has remained true to its origins. Of course, with a lineup that eschews drums in favor of simply a bass, guitar, mandolin and banjo, the band is tailor-made to play to its bluegrass influences. Its live albums, Mountain Tracks, Vol. 1-5, display that sound best. Indeed, the group’s most-recent studio album, 2009’s The Show, even went so far as to feature drums on a few tracks. Those rock influences will no doubt take a back seat to the bluegrass when YMSB comes to Revolution Live tonight, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

FRIDAY 04-SATURDAY 05: PENN AND TELLER
Although generally associated with a long-running Las Vegas act and a vaguely dickish brand of anarcho-libertarianism, Penn and Teller deserve props simply for endurance. As the comedic magicians first performed together in 1975, for many of us, there has never been a world that did not include Penn and Teller. We know nothing else. We know not an Earth in which there is not a loud-mouthed brunet torturing a blond mime with a variety of seemingly deadly traps that prove to be delightful illusions. And we are thankful for that. A world with Penn and Teller is a better world, even if we shudder to think what would happen if they ran it.

WEDNESDAY 26: RUSSELL SIMMONS
Screw Donald Trump and Tony Robbins. Philanthropist Russell Simmons has the magic touch for getting filthy rich, and he wants to share it with you at his book-signing for Super Rich: A Guide to Having It All. The co-founder of Def Jam, big brother to the Rev. Run and co-creator of clothing lines Phat Farm and Baby Phat has an estimated net worth of $340 million. In his book, the Buddhist businessman combines spiritual wisdom with street smarts to teach readers that true riches are based more on what’s in your heart than what’s in your bank account. Simmons will autograph books and pose for pictures free of charge, but his book must be purchased at this Books and Books location to meet him.
FRIDAY 28: NOFX
San Francisco punk act NOFX returns to South Florida this week, touring with East Coast contemporaries Bouncing Souls. NOFX released a compilation album, The Longest, this past summer, chronicling a career that has now gone on for close to 30 years (!) and seen the rise of bassist and lead singer Fat Mike’s Fat Wreck Chords become one of the biggest indie labels in punk rock. Cobra Skulls and Old Man Markley will open the show. Plus, joining the bands for the Florida leg of the tour will be the new South Florida punk supergroup Nobody’s Hero, which consists of members of Guajiro, the Vandals and Against All Authority. Nobody’s Hero just released its self-titled debut album on Achala Records, the indie label founded by Guajiro’s Will Lopez.

FRIDAY 28: ZONA SUR
In keeping with one of its reasons for being — the screening of high-quality films that don’t have wide distribution — the Coral Gables Art Cinema presents Zona Sur, a foreign film that has not yet received distribution inside the United States. Despite that fact, the Spanish-language film hauled in awards at last year’s Sundance Film Festival for both directing and writing. The film takes place in La Paz, the capital of Bolivia, and tells the story of an upper-class family living in that city’s ritzy Southern District (the Zona Sur of the title). As change sweeps into Bolivia and the country’s poor gain more and more power, the old aristocracy sinks into decadency, and the family’s matriarch tries to hold them together in the face of a changing world. The film will screen through Feb. 3.
FRIDAY 28: TOKYO POLICE CLUB
Garage-rock act Tokyo Police Club is talented enough to play Coachella and then make a video mocking its off-stage antics at the prestigious music festival. Proving that they don’t take themselves too seriously, the band’s members filmed themselves in traffic with R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” blaring in the background and getting kicked out of a party on a nearby golf course. The Canadian quartet known for its frenetic guitars and enthusiastic rhythms released a new album, Champ, this past June. “(Wait Up) Boots of Danger” is an upbeat single off the album, but the song’s video is even cooler, depicting a group of dogs having adventures and jumping into a swimming pool. Indie-pop act Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin also will perform.
FRIDAY 28: LITTLE DRAGON
The Swedish electronic synth-pop act Little Dragon will make its first appearance in South Florida tonight at Miami’s most goofily named club. But despite the deeply silly name, the Electric Pickle has specialized during its brief existence in bringing to Miami the sort of electronic acts that the big-time, South Beach hot spots overlook. Little Dragon continues the Electric Pickle’s outré lineup, fronted by Swedish-Japanese vocalist Yukimi Nagano, who sings over keyboards and a bass-and-drums rhythm section that calls to mind the glossy, dance-ready pop sound that has made Swedish music famous. (Well, that and Scandinavian death metal. But that’s neither here nor there.) Opening for Little Dragon will be Billygoat, a band that combines its music with animated shorts that play during the set.

WEDNESDAY 19: STEAMPUNK ART SHOW
Steampunk … the whole subgenre is tough to explain to someone who’s never heard it. It’s a bit like sci-fi set in the Victorian Age. A great deal of the movement — which includes literature, art, fashion and much more — posits a world in which steam power has accomplished things it never did in ours. The work of H.G. Wells (The Time Machine, The Island of Doctor Moreau) and Jules Verne (Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea) is considered seminal. Will Smith’s Wild Wild West is not (though it’s as good an introduction to the basics of the genre as any). So now that we got the introduction out of the way, see what the locals can do when more than 20 artists display their steampunk-influenced work tonight. The event will include live-painting and glass-blowing, as well as roller-derby girls. We’re not quite sure what they have to do with anything, but we’re not about to point that out to them, as they are tougher than us. Make sure to wear your top hat and dust off your monocle. If you arrive by dirigible, you win.
THURSDAY 20: DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS
The finest Southern rock act in existence has hit a creative peak, at least if you judge these things in terms of output. Less than a year after the March 2010 issue of The Big To-Do, the Truckers are set to release Go-Go Boots in February. If past performance is any indication, this will be the album that finally launches the band into significant mainstream success, as each subsequent album since 2004’s The Dirty South has climbed a bit higher in the charts, with The Big To-Do peaking at No. 22. From what we’ve heard of the yet-to-be-released album (which is, admittedly, all of two songs, “The Thanksgiving Filter” and “Used To Be a Cop”), it will be a pretty significant departure from the band’s gritty sound. Guitarist Patterson Hood called the album the band’s “most-Muscle-Shoals-sounding album,” and we’re dying to hear more at the Culture Room tonight.
THURSDAY 20-SUNDAY 23: UNITARD
They’re twisted, they’re sick and we’re damn glad they’re coming to Fort Lauderdale. New York-based sketch comedy trio Unitard will perform skits centered on the pop-culture topics that pester us daily, including bad moms, vampires, pornography and politics. The group, which consists of Mike Albo, Nora Burns and David Ilku, has made videos mocking Whole Foods, BP executives who want to destroy the Earth and a hilarious spoof on Ann Coulter. In the parody dating video, Coulter writhes around on a stage begging, “If you’re a horny, red-steak guy looking for a right-wing [C word] who wants to nuke the Arab world, most of Europe and while we’re at it Canada — call me!”
Location: Andrews Living Arts Theater, 23 N.W. Fifth St., Fort Lauderdale
Time: 8 p.m.

SATURDAY 22: CEDRIC GERVAIS
Some house DJs create a scene, but in Miami, Cedric Gervais is the scene. The French DJ left his home in Marseilles to take on residencies at Cameo, Nikki Beach and Space. He has been known to unleash irresistible new beats each year at Winter Music Conference. But the devotion of his dance-floor disciples is best illustrated by the hundreds of people who line up to see him spin on Space’s terrace. His song “Mauri’s Dream” has become a staple in Pete Tong’s sets, but one of his most-amusing singles is “Let’s Take Drugs,” a trance tune with samples of George W. Bush’s voice. Gervais will spin with Patrick M. on the terrace, and Martin Buttrich will rock the techno loft.
Location: Space, 34 N.E. 11th St., Miami
Time: 11 p.m.-5 a.m.

SATURDAY 22: GALACTIC
One of the premier contemporary purveyors of New Orleans funk, Galactic tends to change it up each time it breezes through on a tour. Past incarnations of the normally instrumental act have included fiery vocalist Theryl “Houseman” deClouet, and this year’s tour features the addition of Corey Glover, the singer for Living Colour, and Corey Henry, the trombone player for New Orleans institution the Rebirth Brass Band. The funk will run deep. Local guitar whiz Bobby Lee Rodgers and reggae act Fourth Dimension will open the show.
Location: Revolution Live, 200 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale
Time: 8 p.m.
